I was working with some actors earlier this week - it was my first time working with Jordan Christopher, but I’d worked with Stephanie Marion Wood and Carly Harding many times.
We had zipped through the work we were meant to be doing pretty quickly, so with some spare time on set I said ‘hey, you guys fancy filming a comedy sketch?’.
They agreed, so I quickly hid in another room and wrote a script.
When you write something in five minutes, it may not be a masterpiece, but I think it forces you to write with immediacy, with energy.
The actors learned the words by swiftly running lines with each other—- at first reading the lines from their phones, but within minutes, they were off-book.
We shot it in thirty minutes.
The sketch is about Oasis, about the scramble for tickets. We filmed it BEFORE the tickets were released, so there was a chance it wouldn’t be relevant, but luckily, things played out on Saturday exactly how I thought they would, so the sketch worked.
Another stroke of luck came hours after we completed filming; when Noel Gallagher’s daughter, Anais, moaned about men who are trying to ‘gatekeep’ Oasis. That’s exactly what our sketch is about!
The good thing about being swift with your creativity is that there’s no time for the inner-critic. There’s no time to talk yourself out making something. Likewise, the actors didn’t have time to worry that they weren’t doing a good job, we were filming too quickly for them to even consider it! (Luckily, they’re all brilliant).
I hope you enjoy it, whether you’re an Oasis fan or not.
